What is Finasteride?

Finasteride is a medication used to treat hair loss (male pattern baldness) in men and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is an enlarged prostate. It works by decreasing the amount of the natural hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body, which leads to increased hair growth and slower hair loss. For BPH, it helps to reduce the size of the enlarged prostate.

How does Finasteride Work?

Finasteride works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). High levels of DHT lead to hair follicle shrinkage and prostate enlargement. By reducing DHT levels, Finasteride helps in hair regrowth and improves urinary flow in men with BPH.

Do not take Finasteride if you have any of the following conditions:

  • If you are allergic to finasteride or any other ingredients in the tablet.
  • Finasteride is not intended for use in women or children.
  • Women who are or may become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken Finasteride tablets, as it can be absorbed through the skin and cause birth defects.
  • Before starting Finasteride, inform your doctor if you have liver disease or prostate cancer.

How to Take Finasteride

  • Finasteride is an oral medication taken in tablet form.
  • Take the tablet with water, with or without food.
  • It is usually taken once daily, as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Continue taking Finasteride even if you do not notice an immediate benefit. It may take several months to see an improvement.
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose to catch up.
